The department is an accredited workplace for graduate education and doctoral studies in pathology. Its laboratories provide complete diagnostic service (autopsy, biopsy and cytology examinations) and offer a range of modern diagnostic methods, from immunohistochemistry through molecular genetics to morphometry, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, and virtual microscopy. The workplace serves as a consulting center for difficult histopathological diagnosis not only within the region but for the whole CR. Employees are involved in a wide range of research projects.
As the first department of pathology within the university hospitals, it received a NASKL audit, introduced a quality management system according to ISO 15189: 2007, and is accredited by the Czech Accreditation Institute. The department successfully participates in the prestigious international quality control programs of UK NEQAS (since 2006) and Scandinavian NordiQC and serves as one of the reference laboratories for performing highly specialized examinations of oncology patients before commencing costly biological treatment.
