Patients with severe metabolic and nutritional disorders, particularly those requiring nutritional support, are treated at the department, as are patients following difficult operations, patients with severe digestive tract disorders and patients with oncological diseases who suffer from the metabolic complications of oncological treatment. In addition, patients with kidney disease are treated with the latest methods including transplantation. These patients are provided with all the complex care available. The diabetes section of the department deals with the treatment of complicated forms of diabetes. A significant proportion of patients are older than 78 years of age. These patients are given comprehensive care and intensive care as well as follow-up care to intensify therapy and enable good quality of life.
Another part of the department is a twenty-bed intensive care unit for resuscitation which treats patients of all critical and serious conditions of an internal nature (with the exception of cardiovascular diseases) as well as patients following difficult operations. An important function of the department is the treatment of patients with gastroenterological and nephrological disorders, patients with immune alternative conditions, severe sepsis, and patients with difficult-to-manage wounds. Resuscitation care is also provided to patients with complicated hematological disorders.
The department occupies a strong position in the Czech Republic, particularly in the treatment of otherwise unsolvable heavy metabolic conditions and vital organ failure, especially the kidneys and lungs. It is quite exceptional in terms of the comprehensive approach it offers to the treatment of intra-abdominal disorders, for example patients with extensive abdominal defects or intestinal fistulas. The number of such patients is on the rise and the treatment can be problematic. Comprehensive care for intra-abdominal disorders has yet to be routinely implemented in other hospitals in the Czech Republic.
Thanks to its success in the treatment of abdominal disorders, the department has become an educational and therapeutic center for such treatment and is currently the only center of its kind in the whole Czech Republic. Research is focused on intensive metabolic care, lipid metabolism disorders, nephrology, wound healing, and geriatric care. The research laboratory is also a training and teaching facility for students of Charles University and other schools.
