The department with its size and range of activities is among the largest such departments in the CR. Every year about 60,000 outpatients are treated, nearly 5,000 surgeries performed, and about 5,000 patients hospitalized. Highly specialized care is provided, including consultation and supraconsultation activities within a complex range of medical fields of general surgery and plastic surgery. These two specialties form senior consultant workplaces. Another part of the department is a highly specialized intensive care unit.
The department ranks among the most important education centers in the field of laparoscopic surgery of the large intestine and rectum.
The primary interest of the Department of General Surgery is surgery of the alimentary canal, liver, pancreas, bile ducts, and surgery of breast glands. Within these fields the department ranks among the top workplaces in the CR. Bariatric surgery, classical and laparoscopic surgery of hernias, and thyroid gland surgery are also standard procedures performed here. Since 2016, robot assisted surgeries of the rectum have been carried out. In recent years, new operational methods of laparoscopic resection of the liver and pancreas have been developed and introduced. The Department of Trauma Surgery is part of the overall structure of the Trauma Center for adults in University Hospital Hradec Králové. It deals with the most complicated trauma cases in the whole East Bohemian Region and has at its disposal the latest methods of computer navigated operational procedures.
The Department of Vascular Surgery performs highly specialized interventions in the abdominal aorta, arteries of the extremities, and planned and urgent treatment of carotid arteries conditions. It also participates in the development and application of hybrid vascular techniques.
The Department of Plastic Surgery, besides cosmetic interventions, offers complicated microsurgical reconstructions with the help of lobes following injuries and after amputations.
The department also participates in the teaching of students from the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové and the training of doctors in the graduate PhD program. It is an accredited center for instructing young surgeons and a center for specialized research of national importance.
