The department is the only bed facility for patients with respiratory diseases in the Hradec Králové Region. Besides standard beds, an intensive care unit and a sleeping lab are also available for hospitalized patients. Most patients are examined in a general outpatient department and in a number of specialized consultation centers: a center for sufferers of severe asthma within the framework of the National Center for Severe Asthma; a center for patients with lung cancer – part of the Comprehensive Cancer Center; a consultation center for patients with respiratory insufficiency, cystic fibrosis, and severe chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, and interstitial lung conditions. Sleep disturbances are treated at the Center for Sleep Disorders and Biorhythms. Another part of the outpatient department is a laboratory for pulmonary function investigations and a well-equipped bronchological workplace performing specialized services in the region and beyond (in 2016 nearly 2,300 cases of such specialized service were performed – the highest amount in the CR).
The department provides undergraduate education as well as graduate preparation in the framework of pre-board certification training. In addition, several specialized courses organized by IPVZ Prague are offered. Special events of national significance are organized (Hradec Pneumological Days, Tyrš Day of Bronchial Obstructions, and special seminars such as the Functional Lung Seminar). Scientific and publishing activities include such areas as COPD, bronchial asthma, and pulmonary interstitial disorder and the department is intensively involved in national and international cooperation on these disorders within several registers and databases. We are the country’s leading workplace for creating and updating recommended practices in the field of pulmonology. Doctors at the department have authored many books of national repute.
The department seeks to encourage healthy lifestyle among the general population by participating in projects like the Non-Smoking Hospital and creating an outdoor Pulmonary Park for specialized pulmonary rehabilitation. We have a long tradition of preparing young doctors for the European Breath Testing (HERMES).
