The department ensures the highest level of expert care in the specialties of neonatology, cardiology and pre-natal cardiology, nephrology (including kidney biopsy), endocrinology (center for growth hormone treatment, center for treating premature puberty), diabetology, including treatment using insulin pumps, pulmonology (center for treatment of cystic fibrosis), gastroenterology (special focus on Crohn´s disease), allergology (focused on uncontrolled asthma), immunology (focused on immunodeficiencies), rheumatology, hemato-oncology (treatment of children with lymphoblastic leukemia) and shared oncology care for children with neoplastic diseases.
The department is composed of an intensive care unit for older children (care for critically ill children from the Hradec Králové Region and Pardubice Region and in cooperation with the Children´s Trauma Center for children from the Liberec Region) and a standard bed ward (for infants and older children). The neonatal section of the pediatric department is part of the perinatology center and consists of a bigger intensive care unit for pathologic new born babies, a section for intermediate care, a section for specialized neonatal care, and a section for physiological neonates.
The department is also involved in teaching and research. Many research projects have been undertaken on topics such as gastrointestinal diseases, endocrinopathies, nephropathies and diagnostics of allergic diseases and monitoring children with low birth weight. At the same time all sections of the department serve as teaching workplaces for the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové and the Secondary Medical School. Teaching pediatrics to master’s degree students in the General Medicine and Dentistry programs is supplemented by instructing international students in programs taught in English. The possibilities to study B.A. programs within this field have also significantly expanded.
