The department is a separate workplace of University Hospital Hradec Králové and at the same time forms the basis for the Center for Pediatric Traumatology at University Hospital Hradec Králové. The main focus of its work is general and abdominal surgery, natal surgery, urology, surgery of thoracic wall deformities, soft tissues, and laparoscopic surgery. In the given areas the department closely cooperates with the Department of Pediatrics, Department of Urology, and Department of Plastic Surgery at University Hospital Hradec Králové. The bed capacity is shared with the pediatric section of the Department of Urology.
DPST is a fundamental unit of the Center for Pediatric Traumatology (CPT) at University Hospital Hradec Králové. This center represents an interdisciplinary structure whose purpose is to provide complex multidisciplinary care for seriously injured children and for patients with pediatric-specific fractures within the determined catchment area (Hradec Králové, Pardubice and Liberec Regions).
Annually, about 1,400 patients are hospitalized and 2,200 surgeries performed. Teaching pediatric surgery to undergraduates is part of the overall teaching of surgery at the Academic Department of Surgery. Graduate-level instruction is offered to pediatric surgeons as well as general surgeons, traumatologists, and pediatricians. The department also teaches students from the Secondary Medical School. The Department of Children Surgery and Traumatology is a 2nd degree accredited workplace for pediatric surgery.
