The department is one of the oldest founding workplaces of this field in the CR. If came into existence in 1966 and provides complex genetic consultation services which cover such issues as conception problems and prenatal and oncogenetic consultation, diagnostics of fetus malformation syndromes, innate defects and childhood and adult hereditary diseases. The laboratory section has at its disposal a wide range of cytogenetic and molecular genetic examination methods for prenatal and postnatal diagnostics. It is the only workplace in the CR which routinely offers certain original modifications (R striping of chromosomes). The section of human molecular genetics, which is a common workplace together with the Academic Department of Clinical Biochemistry and Diagnostics, regularly develops and widens its offering of molecular genetic examinations in keeping with contemporary trends and the current state of knowledge in molecular biology.
Medical genetics is among the modern branches of medicine which puts emphasis on the diagnostics of rare diseases. It remains primarily a preventive branch aiming to eliminate the risks of reoccurring serious genetic conditions and prevent serious complications resulting from unfavorable genetic dispositions
