The department provides comprehensive institutional and outpatient care for patients with infectious diseases, including intensive care for both adult and pediatric patients. The professional care is provided to patients of all ages except for newborns.
The department is the only bed facility in the Hradec Králové Region and also provides intensive care for patients from the Pardubice Region. In addition to a general outpatient department, specialized consulting rooms and clinics are available: e.g. consultations concerning hepatic disorders, neuroinfectious care, zoonoses, tropical and parasitic diseases. There are two specialized centers within the department and care is also provided to people with HIV.
The Vaccination and Travel Medicine Center performs vaccination and consultation activities for patients travelling as well as offering vaccines for high risk individuals. The department is involved in international multicenter studies dealing with, among other things, the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis, influenza, and vaccination studies.
The department provides undergraduate education for students of the Faculty of Medicine in Hradec Králové. The Department of Infectious Diseases is an accredited workplace for postgraduate education in the field of infectious diseases and regularly participates in the organization of pre-qualification courses and board certification.
Every year the department organizes a three-day meeting of clinicians and members from other departments to discuss current organizational and professional issues in the field. Physicians and nurses regularly participate actively in symposia and congresses focusing on infectious diseases and issues surrounding vaccination and immunization.
At the Department of Infectious Diseases, between 1300 and 1400 patients are hospitalized annually, with a total treatment time of approximately 8,500 days. The total number of outpatient examinations per year is around 17,000.
