The department provides a full range of care for patient with problems concerning adult cardiac and thoracic surgery for the entire region of up to 1.5 million inhabitants. The scope of heart surgeries includes the latest developments and most up-to-date techniques.
The department ranks among the leading cardiosurgical workplaces within the CR and with the volume of the provided care is the 3rd out of 13 such workplaces in the country. It started in the last decade a whole number of programs which became the key programs of the department and rank the department among the leading European workplaces. Thanks to these programs very good international contacts and links have been maintained with several cardiosurgical workplaces.
The department specializes in conservation and reconstruction surgeries of the aortic and mitral valve, and surgery of the aortic root including valve allografts and autografts (Ross surgery). Great emphasis is put on developing mini-invasive coronary surgery (surgery without extracorporeal circulation, from central sternotomy and mini-thoractomy), catheter implantation of aortal valve, videoasisted operations of mitral and tricuspid valve, thoracoscopic ablation of atrial fibrillation. Every year about 800 heart surgeries is performed.
The department works on research projects in the fields of inflammatory response during heart surgeries with an extracorporeal circulation body in comparison with surgeries without such extracorporeal circulation, in tissue metabolism and perfusion during cardio-surgical intervention. The department further participates in the international study Coronary, which is a comparison of surgical treatment for ischemic heart disease performed with and without the use of extracorporeal circulation. Several other significant international studies are also researched at the department.
The workplace of thoracic surgery performs about 250 operations with traditionally good results. The most frequent have been surgeries of lung tumors, and the ratio of endoscopic lung operations and operations of mediastinum have also increased. Operations on major airways are performed as well.
The department organizes the annual Hradec Králové Day of Cardiosurgery with a focus on cardio-thoracic surgery, an event with an international audience. Other specialized events are the annual national nurse conferences and specialized seminars.
